Poem in Translation: Ghalib’s Hazaaron Khwaahisein Aisi.. by Junaid Maqbool Bhatt

Hazaaron khwaahishen aisi..” is one celebrated and immortal prose-work from among the many penned by Ghalib. It reflects his perception and inference towards life, people and beliefs prevalent in society. Within his social peripheri, Ghalib was known to come across with zeal of a child finding festivity in subtle things. He maintained an elated mood exposing his much appraised wit and humour. Poetry was the only medium that reflected the elements of pathos, hopelessness and tire from within him.

There have been many translations of this work. However, this one is not strictly literal. It rather lets out the poetic impulse encapsulated within each Urdu couplet maintaining coherence between simplicity of words and complexities of emotions. Credit goes to Dr. Junaid Maqbool Bhatt, one from our esteemed camaraderie who bears the taste buds of a connoisseur when it comes to Urdu poetry, especially from Asadullaah Khan Ghalib.

city-viewHazaaron khwaahishen aisi, ke har khwaahish pe dam nikle..
Bohat nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle..
Thousands of desires, each one, to die for..
I have been granted many, still, I yearn for more..

Dare kyun mera qatil kya rahega us ki gardan par..
Wo khuun jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yun dam-ba-dam nikle..
My slayer need not fear, my blood will not stain his collar..
All my life I have let blood, through my tears..

Nikalna khuld se aadam ka sunte aye hain lekin..
Bohat be-aabaru ho kar tere kuuche se hum nikle..
Tales of Adam’s exile from paradise pale in comparison..
With such disgrace I left your lane..

Bharam khul jaaye zaalim tere qaamat ki daraazi ka..
Agar is turra-e-purapech-o-kham ka pech-o-kham nikle..
Your stature would lose some of its height..
If the knots of your tresses were to come apart..

Magar likhvaaye koi us ko khat to hum se likhvaaye..
Hui subah aur ghar se kaan par rakh kar qalam nikle..
Do you want a letter written?
Come to me, I always carry a pencil ready..

Hui is daur mein mansuub mujhse baadaa-aashaami..
Phir aayaa vo zamaana jo jahan se jaam-e-jam nikle..
I popularized wine drinking in my time..
Just like the “cup of jamshed” did in its time..

Hui jin se tavaqqo khastagi ki daad paane ki..
Wo hum se bhi ziyaada khasta-e-teg-e-sitam nikle..
I expected accolades for my penury..
Little knowing that he was ahead even in that..

Muhabbat mein nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka..
Usi ko dekh kar jeete hain jis kaafir pe dam nikle..
In love, life and death lose relevance..
I live for thee, I die for thee..

Zaraa kar jor seene par ki tir-e-pursitam nikle..
Jo wo nikle to dil nikle, jo dil nikle to dam nikle..
Make an effort, take this arrow of pain out..
With the arrow, the heart comes out, with the heart, the pain..

Khuda ke vaaste pardaa na Kaabe se uthaa zaalim..
Kahin aisaa na ho yaan bhi wahi kaafir sanam nikle..
God forbid, should the veil come off the Kaaba..
And I see the infidel idol there..

Kahaan maikhaane ka darwaaza ‘ghalib’ aur kahaan vaaiz..
Par itna jaante hain kal wo jaata tha k ham nikle..
I don’t know, how the priest and bar are related..
But, as I left yesterday, I saw him enter..
